November 2008 was a momentous time for the Winnipeg – we achieved Safe Community designation.
In the months since we received our Safe Communities status, we have been forced to think about what the designation actually means to us.
On the surface, it means we achieved the very thing we set out to accomplish – a city dedicated to making its people safer and healthier. Beneath the surface, it means so much more.
Designation as a Safe Community places Winnipeg among world leaders in safety promotion and aligns us with 53 other communities in Canada dedicated to reducing the rate of personal injuries and promoting a culture of safety from coast to coast.
Being recognized as a leader in safety promotion, education and outreach brings a certain level of responsibility and Winnipeg now has a reputation to uphold and embrace. As a city, we will continue to make our communities safer and more prosperous for all.
We believe our stakeholders and partners will keep working together to impact the safety, health and well-being of our children, coworkers, friends and neighbours.
Safety, after all, is a cornerstone of what makes our city a home and we are taking strides to
